Make it so

Today is First Contact day.

In the Star Trek universe, it’s the date on which Humans first make contact with an alien race, the Vulcans. It’s a strange holiday to celebrate maybe, but I wore my red shirt in honor of the occasion. First Contact is also my favorite Star Trek movie, and I plan to watch it after work.

The first thing I heard at work this morning, before any salutation, was a question from my boss.

“Can you think of any alien races that start with the letter ‘M’?”

I first said Martian. It was the short, oversized-head of an answer sitting in the front of my brain like a tee-ball. But my boss informed me that he was actually looking for something to alliterate with Martian.

Sitting back in my chair, I set my mind to work. He came up with Macra. I said Mandalorian. Both too obscure. He said we were trying to come up with something to use in a column that normal people would understand.

Which, of course, means I’m not a normal person. And I’m OK with that.

I’ve established myself as a master of Sci-Fi both popular and obscure, and this matter was not considered closed until I had been consulted. It’s a small victory, to be sure, but it’s my victory. I’ve worked hard to earn my reputation.

My nerdiness even came up in my interview for this job. On my website, there’s a little section called “Off the clock” that explains some of my hobbies, including that I play online Star Trek role-playing games. One of the people who is now a boss of mine asked about them in my phone interview.

Now I sit, King of the Office Nerds, being the first to wish everybody a happy First Contact Day. They tell me to live long and prosper, putting up their hands in some kind of finger configuration that is NOT a Vulcan greeting. And I return to my work, knowing that my crown is secure.

As for my shirt. This shirt is Captain Jean-Luc Picard red, not unnamed security officer No. 3 red.
